Henny Lim, a flight attendant with Cebu Pacific, recently shared this lesser-known fact on TikTok, explaining that the gesture is actually part of what’s called the “bracing position.”
In her video, Henny said:
“This position involves fastening your seatbelt securely, sitting upright, sitting on your hands with your thumbs tucked in, and keeping your feet flat on the floor.”
So, why sit on their hands? According to Henny, it’s to minimize potential injuries in case of a sudden impact. The posture keeps the body stable, reduces unnecessary movement, and helps prevent harm if the plane were to experience turbulence or an emergency landing.
She also explained that while flight attendants are in this position, they’re not just sitting quietly — they’re performing what’s known as a “silent review.”
“During this time, we mentally go through emergency procedures — where the safety equipment is located, how to open the doors, what commands to give, and what to look for outside the aircraft,” Henny shared.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirms that this bracing position serves two main purposes:
- To reduce flailing (uncontrolled body movement during impact).
- To lessen the risk of secondary injuries caused by sudden jolts.
Henny isn’t the only flight attendant sharing behind-the-scenes insights. Many crew members now use social media to help passengers understand aviation safety better.
