Hollywood is mourning the loss of acclaimed British actor Michael Pennington, who has passed away at the age of 82. The news was confirmed by his representatives, prompting an outpouring of heartfelt tributes from fans, fellow actors, and theater lovers around the world.
While many movie fans knew him best for portraying the Imperial officer Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, Pennington’s remarkable career stretched far beyond the galaxy far, far away.
Born in Cambridge, England, on June 7, 1943, Pennington built a reputation as one of Britain’s finest Shakespearean performers. His passion for classical theater led him to co-found the English Shakespeare Company in 1986 alongside director Michael Bogdanov — a project that cemented his legacy on the stage.
Over the decades, Pennington became widely respected for his powerful performances in productions of Hamlet, King Lear, and many other literary classics. His dedication to theater earned admiration from audiences and colleagues alike.
Following the announcement of his passing, tributes quickly flooded social media.
Actress Miriam Margolyes remembered him as a “brilliant, wise, and clear” performer, describing him as a longtime friend from their university days in Cambridge.

Although younger audiences may remember him from Star Wars, Pennington enjoyed a long and distinguished career in film and television as well. He appeared in projects such as Hamlet and The Iron Lady, where he portrayed British politician Michael Foot.
He also shared the stage with legendary actress Dame Judi Dench and her late husband Michael Williams in several theater productions. Pennington once revealed that watching Dench perform as Ophelia in a 1957 production of Hamlet inspired him to pursue acting professionally.
“There’s truly no one like Judi,” he once said. “For her, acting is like play.”
Despite his impressive Shakespearean background, Pennington admitted he was often surprised by how strongly fans connected him to Star Wars. In interviews over the years, he joked that audiences frequently waited outside theaters to ask him about the Death Star rather than Shakespeare.
His final credited screen role came in 2022, when he voiced The Trust in several episodes of the sci-fi series Raised by Wolves.
